Learn more about the Sayana® Press Challenge and why training health providers to administer Sayana® Press can be particularly valuable for women who prefer injectable contraceptives but don’t have regular access.
DISTRIBUTION MODEL INNOVATION
Women's Choice Initiative seeks to increase access to self-injectable contraceptives for women. It will achieve 200 doses of Sayana Press to 200 women over three months, reaching 800 beneficiaries through household impact and, in the long run, over 10,000 women.
The distribution model works through Private Patent Medicine Stores (PPMS) in Bakassi LGA, Cross River State, who will be trained and supplied with Sayana Press to administer to women in their communities. Each woman will receive a three-month dose, and the providers will ensure follow-up and continuous uptake while tracking usage data. They complement this with demand-generation through household outreach, ensuring entire families benefit from improved reproductive health. What sets Women's Choice Initiative apart is its strong government partnerships, which position it to quickly transition from pilot to large-scale adoption through sustained contraceptive supply chains.
Women’s Choice Initiative was started in 2025 by Abigail Nyala. She serves as the full-time Founder and Program Director, leading efforts to expand access to reproductive health solutions for women.
PILOT AND SCALING GOALS
Directly reach 200 women through 20 patent medical stores.
Distribute 200 proven interventions.
Raise an additional $5,000.

DISTRIBUTION MODEL INNOVATION
Women Self Inject Initiative (WSII) seeks to increase access to modern contraceptives particularly self injectables (Sayana press) among women in low resource settings. WSII’s mission is “Empowering women to take control of their reproductive health needs"
The distribution model is based on private health workers who own drug shops to supply Sayana Press to women. We shall identify and train 30 private health workers (PHW) Masaka district, southern Uganda on family planning counseling and how to train women on self-injection using standard tools developed by PATH. In turn, the PHW will instruct and demonstrate self-injection technique to the women who take Sayana Press as method of choice. We believe that this model eliminates the need for women to return to a clinic every three months for re-injection and improves privacy for the users of the method.
Their team consists of 4 co-founders. Three graduate midwives, Robert Isoke, Hamiidah Nakyanzi, and Usaama Ssewankambo as well as their mentor Felister Apili who have expertise and prior experience working on sexual reproductive health and maternal child health initiatives in various parts of Uganda.
PILOT AND SCALING GOALS

Learn more about the Sayana® Press Challenge and why training health providers to administer Sayana® Press can be particularly valuable for women who prefer injectable contraceptives but don’t have regular access.
DISTRIBUTION MODEL INNOVATION
Health for All Initiative (HAI) distributes low-cost self-injectable contraceptives to adolescent girls and women in Malawi.
The Initiative will identify groups of adolescent girls and women and increase awareness about Sayana Press by addressing cultural and religious beliefs that affect family planning uptake. Motivated community health workers (CHWs) in targeted districts and communities will be trained in counseling, storage and handling of Sayana Press, and behavior change activities to decrease stigma and promote knowledge about contraception for women. Coordination with community leaders and healthcare officials will enable widespread awareness campaigns and access to Sayana Press. Regular focus groups and collaboration with other NGOs will improve understanding of successes and drawbacks of our model and feedback will be integrated as we continue to expand our project. Health for All Initiative believes tackling the root cause of low contraceptive uptake will help in scaling up the distribution of Sayanna Press.
Health for all Initiative was founded in 2021 by Jemimah Nyirongo, Albert Kaonga, and Madeleine Dirmaco, Leonard Mndala and Madeline Stark.

Sayana Press injectable contraceptive.
Learn more about the Sayana® Press Challenge and why training health providers to administer Sayana® Press can be particularly valuable for women who prefer injectable contraceptives but don’t have regular access.
DISTRIBUTION MODEL INNOVATION
Open Health Network distributes Sayana Press to underserved women in Uganda.
The distribution model involves Community Health Workers (CHWs) delivering Sayana press (DMPA) to underserved women in Uganda. The pilot phase of the project is being implemented in the rural district of Kisoro, located in southwestern Uganda. Open Health Network trains participating CHWs using a cascade and incentive-based approach. These CHWs then provide comprehensive family planning information, distribute Sayana Press, and teach consenting women how to self-inject. A team of 10 CHWs is supervised and technically supported by a licensed Nursing Officer or Midwife at the public health facility within their catchment.
To ensure women's continuation of contraception, Open Health Network seeks husbands' support, encourage self-injection, and translate user guides into local languages and distribute the same to trained women. The team works with medicines supervisors at targeted health facilities to support projections, quantification, ordering, and transportation of Sayana Press to resolve the challenge of consistent stock-outs. The scale-up strategy is based on the involvement of private clinics and drug shops, village women groups, and early adopters to reach over 200,000 underserved women in the next two years at a minimum cost.
Open Health network was founded in the year 2021 by a team of 4 enthusiastic social entrepreneurs: Mushime Moses, Kakeeto Henry, Mukeshimana Meridah, and Gerald Rukundo. Moses serves as a full-time executive director; Henry as a Grants and fundraising Manager; while Meridah services as the community advocacy Officer. Learn more about the Sayana® Press Challenge and why training health providers to administer Sayana® Press can be particularly valuable for women who prefer injectable contraceptives but don’t have regular access.
DISTRIBUTION MODEL INNOVATION
The proportion of women who die in pregnancy or during birth remains high in Nigeria. Some of the factors contributing to the problem and frequent births and limited access to desired methods of contraception, most notably in rural areas. Despite strong evidence that spacing births contributes to a reduction of maternal and child mortality, only 10% of the 40 million women of reproductive age are using modern contraceptive methods in Nigeria. The unmet need for family planning remains high.
To change this narrative and increase women's access to contraceptive services in Nigeria, Power in Her Hand Initiative will pilot the training of Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) to introduce and distribute an innovative and easy-to-use injectable contraceptive, Sayana Press, in rural areas of Sokoto in Northern Nigeria. To reach even more girls and women in need of these services, Power in Her Hand Initiative will consider the training of community-based distributors in door-to-door distribution, proprietary and patent medical vendors, or clients themselves to achieve scale.
PILOT AND SCALING GOALS
- Distribute Sayana Press to 500 women during the pilot
- Train 100 community health workers during the pilot
- Distribute Sayana Press to 25,000 women by the end of year 2
- Train 5,000 community health workers by the end of year 2

Bronze Health Care Initiative will scale up last mile distribution of Sayana press in rural
Uganda giving women more power to choose when to have and not have children.
The Bronze Health Care Initiative team will import their own stock of Sayana Press into Uganda through a partnership with Pfizer Inc. Once purchased, the stock of Sayana press will be verified at the customs by Uganda revenue authority, then taken to the main store where it is counted, recorded in stock cards and stored. Then it will be distributed to various district stores managed by community based distribution facilitators (CBDFs) who are employees of Bronze. These CBDF's are area managers who will oversee a network of pharmacy store owners (also known as Community Based Distributors or CBDs) in their region. It will be the CBDF's job to coordinate the distribution of Sayana Press from the main Bronze office to each CBD or partner pharmacy across four regions of Uganda. It will also be the responsibility of the CBDF to conduct trainings on Sayana Press for each CBD and community health worker who will make the injectable contraceptive available in last mile communities.
