DISTRIBUTION MODEL INNOVATION
Empower Energy operates in Odisha, India. Their customers live in remote, interior, and tribal villages. In most cases, they live in extreme poverty and are engaged in subsistence agriculture or seasonal casual labor. They are either completely off-grid, or they receive electricity for only 2 to 3 hours per day, with frequent outages that can last for months.
The Empower Energy solution removes all upfront cost for the final customer and establishes a trusted brand and long-term local presence in the villages where they operate. Their team identifies a village-level entrepreneur to become an Empower Energy franchisee, provides them with a solar-powered charging station, and trains them in its operation. Customers then have access to electricity-enabled products and services on a pay-per-use basis, including LED lamps for domestic use and power banks for mobile phone charging. After use, they are returned to the entrepreneur to be exchanged for a freshly charged product.
Their vision is to establish a wide-reaching network of Empower Energy franchisees across rural and remote India to meet the energy needs of their customers.
